World of Glass
The art of glassmaking in Murano is believed to have begun in the 10th century, shaped by Asian and Middle Eastern influences during Venice’s rise as a powerful trading port.
Murano’s global reputation was firmly established in 1291, when the Republic of Venice decreed that all glass furnaces be moved to the island. The measure, intended to protect Venice’s largely wooden buildings from fire, ultimately transformed Murano into the world’s most prestigious center of glass artistry.
